How to Use SplitUp

Everything you need to know to split expenses fairly with friends, family, or your contractor.

Getting Started

SplitUp makes it easy to track shared expenses and settle up fairly. Here's how to get up and running in under 2 minutes.

Create your free account

Go to splitupwith.us and click 'Get Started Free'. Enter your email and password. No credit card required for the free plan.

Verify your email

Check your inbox for a verification email from SplitUp. Click the link to verify your account.

Create your first group

Click '+ New Group' on the dashboard. Give it a name like 'Vacation Trip' or 'Apartment 4B'. You'll be added as the group owner automatically.

Add your friends

Inside the group, go to the Members tab. Click '+ Add' to add members by email, or use the ๐Ÿ”— Invite button to share a link via WhatsApp or any messaging app.

Add your first expense

Click '+ Add Expense', enter the amount and description, select who paid, and choose how to split it. That's it!

The group owner's plan determines the group limits. If you're on Pro, your group members can use all features for free!

Groups

Groups are the core of SplitUp. Each group tracks expenses and balances between its members.

Creating a Group

Click '+ New Group' on your dashboard

Free plan allows up to 3 groups. Upgrade to Pro for unlimited groups.

Give your group a name

Use descriptive names like 'Japan Trip 2026', 'Beach House', or 'Office Lunch Group'.

What you'll see:

โ€ข A text field to enter your group name

โ€ข An optional description field

โ€ข A "Create Group" button

โ€ข You're automatically added as the group owner

Adding Members

You have two ways to add members:

Add someone who already has a SplitUp account using their email address.

๐Ÿ™‹ As Guest

Add anyone by name only - no account needed. Great for people who don't want to sign up.

Invite by Link

Click the ๐Ÿ”— Invite button in the Members tab

Only group owners can generate invite links.

Copy the link or share via WhatsApp

The link expires after 7 days and can be used up to 10 times.

Toggle 'Require Approval' if you want to review requests

When enabled, you'll see a yellow badge on the Members tab when someone requests to join. You can approve or reject each request.

Adding Expenses

There are two ways to add expenses - manually or by scanning a receipt with AI.

Manual Entry

Click '+ Add Expense' in your group

You can also use the '๐Ÿ“ธ Scan' button to use AI receipt scanning instead.

Enter the amount and description

Add a category (Food & Drink, Transport, etc.) and date for better reporting.

Select who paid

Choose the person who actually paid the bill from the dropdown.

Choose how to split

Pick from Equal split, Custom $ amounts, or Percentage splits.

The Add Expense form includes:

โ€ข Amount - enter the total bill amount

โ€ข Description - e.g. "Dinner at Mamas"

โ€ข Category - Food & Drink, Transport, etc.

โ€ข Date - defaults to today

โ€ข Paid by - who actually paid the bill

โ€ข Split type - Equal, Custom $, or Percentage

โ€ข Members - who to include in the split

Split Options

Equal Split

Divides the total equally among all selected members. Best for shared meals or group activities.

Custom $ Amount

Manually enter exactly how much each person owes. Great when people ordered different things.

Percentage

Enter a percentage for each person. They must add up to 100%. Useful for shared bills where someone uses more.

AI Receipt Scanning

SplitUp uses Claude AI to automatically read receipts and extract all items, prices, tax, and tip.

Click '๐Ÿ“ธ Scan' in your group

This opens the receipt scanner. You'll need to be inside a group to scan.

Upload a photo of your receipt

Take a clear photo or upload from your camera roll. JPG, PNG, and HEIC are all supported.

Claude AI reads your receipt

Takes a few seconds. Claude extracts all items, prices, tax, and tip automatically.

Review and edit items

Check the extracted items for accuracy. You can edit names, prices, add missing items, or remove incorrect ones. A warning appears if the total doesn't match.

Set the tip

If tip was printed on the receipt, it's auto-filled. Otherwise choose 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 25%, or enter a custom amount.

Assign items to people

Tap the name buttons to select who had each item. Tax and tip are automatically split proportionally based on each person's items.

Review totals and create expense

See exactly what each person owes including their share of tax and tip, then click 'Create Expense'.

The assign items step shows:

โ€ข Each item from the receipt listed individually

โ€ข Price next to each item

โ€ข Name buttons for each group member to tap

โ€ข Highlighted buttons show who's assigned to each item

โ€ข "+ Everyone" button to quickly assign shared items

โ€ข Per-person amount shown below each item

โ€ข Warning if an item has nobody assigned

For best results, take the photo in good lighting with the full receipt visible. Flatten any wrinkles before shooting.

How Tax & Tip Work

Tax and tip are split proportionally based on each person's items. If you ordered $30 worth of food and the total bill was $100, you pay 30% of the tax and tip. This is fairer than splitting tax/tip equally!

Settlements

Settlements track who owes what and let you record payments when people pay each other back.

Understanding Balances

SplitUp automatically calculates who owes who based on all expenses in the group. Go to the Settlements tab to see outstanding balances.

You need to pay this person back for expenses they covered for you.

This person needs to pay you back for expenses you covered.

Recording a Payment

Go to the Settlements tab in your group

You'll see all outstanding balances between members.

Click 'Make Payment' or 'Confirm Received'

'Make Payment' is for when you're paying someone. 'Confirm Received' is for when someone paid you.

Enter the amount and payment method

You can make partial payments too - you don't have to pay the full amount at once. Select Cash, Venmo, Zelle, Bank Transfer, etc.

The other person confirms

The payment shows as 'Pending' until the recipient confirms they received it. Once confirmed it's marked as Settled.

Click "See how this is calculated" on any balance to see exactly which expenses make up the amount.

Guest Settlements

For guest members (people without accounts), the group owner can mark payments as received on their behalf. Guests auto-confirm payments since they don't have an account to confirm from.

Click "Export PDF" to open a print-friendly version. Use your browser's print function to save as PDF.

Downloads a spreadsheet with all expenses, members, categories, and settlement history. Opens in Excel or Google Sheets.

Access from Dashboard โ†’ Reports tab โ†’ View All Groups Report. See combined spending across all your groups with category breakdowns and per-group summaries.

Do my friends need to pay?

No! Only the group owner needs a Pro plan. Your friends can join your groups, add expenses, view settlements, and use the app completely free. They only need Pro if they want to create their own unlimited groups or get more than 3 scans/month.

Cancelling

Cancel anytime from Account Settings โ†’ Manage Billing. You keep Pro access until the end of your billing period. No cancellation fees ever.
